CareIndex Guide · Updated 2026-07-18
Staten Island healthcare is compact and personal in a way the rest of the city isn't: two hospital systems, a manageable set of practice clusters, and doctors who see generations of the same families. The trade-off is thinner specialist coverage — so knowing what's strong on-island and what's worth a trip over the bridge or on the ferry is the whole game.
Staten Island University Hospital (Northwell), with campuses North and South, and Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton handle the borough's hospital care between them. Both run broad outpatient networks, and Northwell's presence links island patients into one of the region's largest referral systems when advanced sub-specialty care is needed.
Practices concentrate along Victory Boulevard and Forest Avenue on the North Shore, Hylan Boulevard's long medical corridor down the East Shore, and around the two hospital campuses. The North Shore, closest to the ferry, is the practical choice for Manhattan commuters; the South Shore offers suburban-style offices with parking — a real consideration in the only borough where most patients drive to appointments.
Primary care, pediatrics, OB-GYN, cardiology, orthopedics, and everyday specialties are well covered on-island, typically with shorter waits and lower prices than Manhattan. For rare-disease programs, major cancer centers, or niche pediatric sub-specialties, islanders generally travel — to Manhattan via ferry/express bus, or to Brooklyn's Maimonides and NYU Langone–Brooklyn via the Verrazzano. A sensible setup for many families: a Staten Island primary care home plus a standing relationship with one off-island center for anything advanced.
