Alfio Carroccio, MD

Dr. Carroccio and his PA Damian nearly killed me with their negligence and lack of care. I showed up at my scheduled appointment with extreme chest pain and difficulty breathing in addition to the leg pain for which my ortho originally referred me to Dr. Carroccio, a vascular specialist, to rule out a deep vein thrombosis (clot), “textbook symptoms of pulmonary embolism (PE)" according to my primary care provider (PCP) and every one of the 10+ ER doc's who spoke to me in the ensuing 48 hours when they heard about the chest pains and the clot in my leg. Damian, Dr. Carroccio's PA, saw me first and was dismissive of my leg pain. He spent 15 minutes trying to convince me to go home and “try rest and massage”. Even after finding the clot in my leg, despite being the expert, Dr. Carroccio failed to diagnose the PE. My PCP followed up with Dr. Carroccio that night after I informed him of the clot diagnosis and chest pains as he was concerned it might be a PE. Dr. Carroccio told him there is no way the clot they found could be associated with a PE. Fast forward 24 hours - my chest pain continued to worsen and I fainted in the car the following morning – I called Dr. Carroccio’s office from the car (since he was the expert who had evaluated me) and asked if I should go to the ER to rule out a PE (which is what my PCP had been urging me to do) and specifically asked what else one might do if in fact it were a PE in terms of additional treatment and / or precautions. I was told "nothing" and my PCP "was being irresponsible for suggesting a PE" ; I should go home and take tylenol and he "would not waste the limited supply of the CT dyes on a patient like me"... I was supposed to be heading out to the country for the long weekend where the medical infrastructure is lacking and I shudder to think of what would have happened if I had listened to Dr. Caroccio's advice and put myself behind a wheel and out of reach of timely medical care. On the one year anniversary of my PE, I feel extremely lucky to be alive and wanted to caution others.

He placed my fistula in my arm and also did a revision on my fistula. He also removed an aneurism on my arm and it works great now. I would highly recommend him for any fistula surgery.
