The way my father was treated today at University Hospital at Downstate was unacceptable. Animals are treated with more dignity than he was. My mother arrived at the hospital around 1:00 p.m. to bring him some clothes. When she got there, she found his room in a deplorable condition. The floors were so sticky that even the doctor appeared uncomfortable being in the room. My mother repeatedly called for housekeeping, but no one responded. At approximately 4:30 p.m., I called my mother for an update. Hearing her cry was heartbreaking. She told me that five nurses were sitting at the nurses' station laughing and talking while completely ignoring her requests for assistance. I eventually contacted the Patient Advocacy Department to get someone to listen and address the situation. Unfortunately, by that point, both my parents were so upset and frustrated that my father chose to leave against medical advice. Only then did staff begin to respond and show up. I am deeply saddened and disappointed by the treatment my father received. Patients deserve to be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion. No one should ever be made to feel less than human while seeking medical care.
