want to share my experience with New Providence Shelter, as it highlights some important concerns regarding their approach to mental health care and shelter support. My journey began when I was placed in a mental health shelter; however, my doctor was hesitant to sign the necessary paperwork, as I was deemed high functioning and capable of managing my circumstances. After leaving the mental health shelter, I rented a room in the Bronx for two years. Eventually, I moved to Queens, but that situation did not work out. I then received a letter from my doctor advocating for my placement in a general population shelter rather than a mental health shelter. I proceeded to the assessment shelter in Brooklyn, where I applied for various services. Within three days, I was transferred to a general population shelter, where I spent three months. This experience was an important stepping stone for me. During my time there, I was able to secure an apartment through a real estate broker. Today, I am working as an account manager and am enrolled in school to further my education. In just a few months, I will be transitioning into a data engineering role, with the ultimate goal of earning my doctorate in computer science and starting my own tech business. Despite the challenges I faced, I commend the role other shelters not new providence helping people
