When I went for consult. Everyone was very nice. Nurses from chemo popped their head in to say hi. Dr Drullinsky was very nice & kind. Needless to say things changed quickly.
Numerous problems from Dr D, writing multiple scripts wrong. Inadequate testing. Paperwork not filled out correctly. (She refused to do FMLA for me for work.) I feel she scrambled a lot giving info, & just knew basics of chemo/cancer. Looking back, I would have changed Dr , facility, but it's not easy to do mid treatment.
During prep for 1st chemo I was rudely asked (by the nice nurse who had popped in for consult) why I didn't have a port. I replied, I wasn't aware I needed one, & why subject myself to another surgery? She was not happy.
Chemo was administered by a huge syringe "koolaid" thru my arm vein. (By the "nice" nurse, who was turning to nurse nasty). I was in an open room, with other patients sitting in recliners. Many had friends/family with them. I had been/viewed two other places for chemo. Those places, only the patient was in the room. I asked nurse "you can have people back here?" She huffed "yes! but you can't have a party!" .& there are pretzels & water, but only for patients!" I had previously told her I didn't have a driver, nor would I. So her comment was totally uncalled for. Then she huffed, & " your chemo will turn into 4+ hour long sessions, you'll need to bring food!" I just sat there, feeling even worse about life/cancer. She pushed the chemo, waited, pushed, waited, etc. Felt like the sprayer on a carwash! My arm/vein flinched. She screamed, "quit moving! this is poison, it will eat your skin like acid!" I certainly didn't move, I think it was either an involuntary reflex, or my fibromyalgia.
As chemo continued, things continued to get worse. The nurses in chemo room were not nice. I ended up having emergency surgery to get a Port put in. And was basically told, "i told you, you needed one". I started getting nausea in later treatments. I was dizzy & light headed, & ready to vomit. Then i started hyperventilating, & they told me "hold on", why are you getting sick?" Geez, I don't know maybe cause you're putting poison into me?
Everyday after chemo, I had to return to get a neulasta shot. Almost vomiting again, they treated me like I was crazy for being nauseous. I got the shot, & they said you can leave. I asked for a band aid. Nurse, upset said " for what!?!" Because blood came out after the injection, & I didn't want my shirt stained. It was enough for me to get there & back, so I was not wearing good clothes. However, the last thing I wanted to do was treat a blood stain when I got home!
I have had numerous surgeries, & seen lots of Dr's in different states & even Kuwait. I have never been treated as poorly as how Sloan Kettering treated me! And even worse, this is for cancer! Not like an appendectomy, or broken arm!!
Add a bit more salt to the wound, I was receiving solicitation from Sloan for donations for research during my treatment & afterwards!
Cancer is a high dollar business. Find somewhere where they treat you like your sick, while your sick., not like $$$.
