My family had a deeply disturbing experience at Interfaith Medical Center, involving what I consider elderly neglect. During first shift, my elderly grandmother hurt herself while under the hospital’s care, and what occurred was unacceptable. She had undergone foot surgery the prior Friday and was clearly identified as a fall-risk patient. Despite this, she was not properly assisted. While staff were handling her, her injured foot was dropped, causing significant pain. She was then left without adequate assistance, and in attempting to get back into bed on her own, she further injured herself. Following this incident, staff were slow to respond, communication was poor, and the situation was not handled with the urgency or attentiveness an elderly, post-surgical patient in pain deserves. My grandmother was in visible pain throughout the morning, and our family was left waiting all afternoon for answers, with little to no updates, while she remained vulnerable and distressed. Watching staff drag their feet while an elderly, fall-risk patient needed care, monitoring, and accountability was incredibly frustrating and painful for our family. No family should have to chase information or worry about their loved one’s safety in a hospital setting—especially when clear fall-risk precautions should have been in place. Hospitals are supposed to protect and advocate for their most vulnerable patients. Unfortunately, that did not happen here. I strongly urge leadership to review staff conduct, fall-risk protocols, response times, and communication, particularly when caring for elderly and post-surgical patients.
