During a visit to the ICU to say our final goodbyes to my grandmother, my family and I experienced something truly disheartening. While my mother was bravely expressing her emotions, one of the nurses seemed to find it amusing, laughing as if our pain was entertainment. It was a moment of profound sadness for us, and this lack of empathy from a healthcare professional added to our distress. It's instances like these that make us question the quality of care provided. Hospitals should be places of comfort and compassion, especially during times of loss. I sincerely hope that the hospital administration takes steps to address the behavior of their staff and ensures that all patients and families are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

Full disclosure, I'm a doctor that graduated med school from downstate a few years ago. A functioning university hospital in a place like east flatbush brooklyn is an impossible task from get-go. In many ways people and the reality of care may wind up getting short changed because doctors/nurses/staff are trying to do the impossible. There are naturally some lazy/useless people here (like all places) that can ruin someone's personal experience. I am sorry for that but also know that this place is a fine institution and has many individuals with hearts of gold that serve humanity first.
