I am deeply disturbed by the treatment my father received during his recent dental visit for a filling and crown at this clinic. Before the procedure, I made sure to inform the assistant about my father's language barrier and offered to act as a translator. I was assured it wouldn’t be necessary, and everything would be fine.
However, shortly after my father was taken into the operatory, I overheard loud voices and raised tones from the back. Feeling uneasy, I followed my gut instinct and rushed in to check on him. To my horror, I found the dentist treating him in a completely unprofessional and disrespectful manner. She was yelling, "Can’t be saved!" repeatedly in Cantonese, with an impatient and disgruntled tone, simply because my father was struggling to follow her instructions.
When the dentist noticed I was standing behind her, she looked embarrassed. I immediately asked why she was speaking to my father in such a degrading manner. If there was a misunderstanding, why didn’t she accept my offer to act as a translator? She apologized, saying, "I didn’t know his relative was there, or I wouldn’t have spoken like that."
I was infuriated and asked, "If I hadn’t been here, how would you have treated him?" I explained that my father had a stroke in the past, leaving him partially paralyzed with impaired speech, which has always caused him self-doubt and uncertainty in expressing himself. For a professional to speak to him this way was not only disrespectful but also caused additional stress. It is completely unacceptable to treat someone like this, particularly someone who is already vulnerable.
I stayed for the remainder of the procedure to act as a translator and made it clear by interjecting the dentist that my father would not be returning for the crown. Afterward, I went to the front desk and demanded the clinic’s business card so I could file a formal complaint. The staff apologize again, promising this would never happen again. However, the apology did little to erase the unprofessional behavior we had witnessed.
This clinic treats many elderly patients, and if the staff cannot provide basic empathy, professionalism, and respect—especially when dealing with vulnerable individuals—then I cannot recommend this place to anyone. The way my father was treated was not only unprofessional, it was damaging. Such behavior preys on those who are unable to protect themselves.
If you care about the well-being and dignity of your family, I strongly urge you to seek dental care elsewhere. This clinic has shown they are incapable of providing the compassionate care that every patient deserves.
