Subject: Formal Complaint – Inaccurate Blood Pressure Readings, Excessive Wait Times, and Declining Trust in Care
I am writing to formally express my dissatisfaction with the care I’ve received at Mount Sinai South Nassau – Family Medicine. I have experienced repeated issues that raise serious concerns about both clinical accuracy and patient care standards.
Inaccurate Blood Pressure Readings
During each visit, my blood pressure is consistently recorded at unusually high levels. I monitor my blood pressure at home twice daily using a reliable, properly calibrated device, and my readings at home are consistently within a normal range. The discrepancies between home and in-office readings lead me to believe:
The machines used at your facility may not be properly calibrated.
Staff may not be following proper technique or positioning protocols during measurement.
There is little to no consideration for how pain, stress, time of day, or other temporary factors can impact blood pressure readings.
A single elevated reading, especially in a clinical setting, should not automatically lead to conclusions about chronic hypertension without further investigation.
White Coat Syndrome & Stressful Environment
In addition to the technical concerns, your clinical environment is stressful in a way that actively contributes to higher blood pressure readings. The long waits are especially frustrating:
Patients often wait 30 minutes or more in the waiting room.
Once called in, we are frequently left waiting inside the exam room for 45 minutes to an hour before being seen by the doctor.
These prolonged delays are not just inconvenient—they create anxiety and tension, which is especially counterproductive when assessing something as sensitive to stress as blood pressure. As someone who experiences white coat syndrome, this is a significant concern that is rarely acknowledged by the staff.
Eroding Trust in Care
Over time, I’ve lost confidence that my care is being handled with the attention it deserves. There is a sense that patients are rushed through the system and treated based on protocol rather than personal context. It feels like individual concerns are dismissed or overlooked in favor of one-size-fits-all assessments and unnecessary prescriptions—often raising doubts about whether the patient’s best interest is truly the priority.
Taking My Care Elsewhere
Due to the ongoing issues described above, I have decided that I will be seeking a new physician to manage my care going forward. I need to feel confident that my healthcare provider is thorough, respectful, and attentive—not just to symptoms, but to context.
What I Expect
Before I move forward, I believe it is important that this feedback be acknowledged and taken seriously. I ask that Mount Sinai South Nassau:
Inspect and recalibrate all blood pressure equipment regularly, or replace outdated devices to ensure accurate and reliable readings.
Ensure staff is trained on proper technique and clinical interpretation of readings, including white coat syndrome.
Evaluate patient flow and scheduling to minimize excessive wait times.
Foster a patient-centered approach, where concerns are heard, validated, and addressed with care.
I hope this review helps improve the experience for future patients, even as I move on from your care. I expect a response confirming that this complaint has been received and reviewed.
