I’ve been going to Go Physical Therapy for several months now, and I’ve really loved my experience at every session. Dr. Wonhee Lee has the magic touch. He’s turned life around from constant daily neck pain after being diagnosed with herniated and budging discs in my neck. He is so knowledgeable, teaching and explaining the reasons behind everything we’re doing at each session. Between manual therapy and new exercise / stretching moves taught each week, I now have an arsenal of tools at my disposal to manage symptoms and get stronger. Dr. Lee is an extremely attentive listener as well, tailoring each session’s plan to match my recovery and symptoms. Even with inevitable flare ups, he is there and able to provide pain relief and send them away asap. Seriously, a weight is lifted off my shoulders every time I leave. Dealing with chronic pain for over five years, I have seen a number of practitioners in New York City and have never had an experience that led me to end a session prematurely. This changed with my visit to Dr. Wonhee Lee, PT, DPT. Basic head injury care 101 is clear. Interventions must be symptom-limited, titrated to the individual, and immediately adjusted in response to patient feedback. In neurologically sensitive cases such as concussion, TMJ, and trigeminal neuralgia, exacerbation is not a goal. It is a signal to reduce or stop. In this case, I clearly and repeatedly communicated that the pressure being used was too strong and was increasing my symptoms. Rather than adjusting, I was told “this is gentle.” I was also told that when other patients report excessive pressure, they are “too sensitive.” This reflects a dismissal of patient-reported data and a failure to individualize care. I also reported that a prior session resulted in several days of significant pain and functional limitation. I was told this was “normal,” which is not consistent with a symptom-guided model of care. Multi-day exacerbation warrants reassessment and downregulation, not persistence. When I asked for the clinical rationale behind the techniques being used, I did not receive clear, evidence-based explanations. Based on his background, which appears to be more focused on orthopedic and sports rehabilitation, this approach may be better suited to athletic or musculoskeletal injuries where some degree of discomfort is expected. However, that model does not translate well to neurologically sensitive chronic pain conditions, where patient feedback and symptom response must guide care in real time. Effective physical therapy requires responsiveness, calibration, and respect for patient feedback as primary data. That standard was not met. I ended the session early due to concerns about safety.
