I had an appointment for my daughter on Friday, March 13. When we checked in, the receptionist called me over to the entrance area where the staff enter to go in out (not the front desk) to complete the check-in process and asked for my insurance card and ID. Which I gave to her. She also asked about my daughter’s primary doctor. As I began giving her the information, she rudely interrupted me and said, “Here, sit over there,” while pointing, even though I was still speaking. I told her that it felt rude, and she responded that she wasn’t being rude. What upset me even more was seeing how polite and welcoming she was to other patients. She greeted them with “hello” when they entered and never pointed or spoke to them the way she did to me. While we were waiting in the exam room, the doctor came in and did not greet me or my child. He didn’t look at us and went straight to the computer. The first thing he said, in a rude tone, was, “What’s the problem?” When I told him she was coughing and snoring, his response was so. As I tried to explain what was going on with my daughter, he was very dismissive. At one point he said he doesn’t see children, but then followed that by saying he sees people of all ages. At that point I felt uncomfortable and dismissed, so I simply responded “okay” and “thank you” to everything he said because I already knew I didn’t feel heard or cared about. When he left the room, he didn’t say goodbye. It’s very discouraging to experience this kind of treatment in a medical setting. I felt as though my concerns about my daughter were treated like a problem rather than something that deserved attention and respect. Experiences like this make it feel as though Black and Brown patients are not treated with the same level of care and respect, which is deeply upsetting. I see why they have 3 stars.
